Philwomenians (graduates of the Philippine Women’s University, Manila) have been invited by the City of Cerritos to participate in the ever-popular Community Spring Festival to be held from Friday, April 24 (5 to 10 p.m.); Saturday, April 25 (noon to 10 p.m.); and Sunday, April 26 (noon to 9 p.m.) at the Cerritos Sports Complex, 19900 Bloomfield Avenue.
“Families are invited to attend and enjoy a variety of activities,” the invitation says, “including food and game booths, rides, entertainment and a fireworks show. Admittance to the festival is free, although certain attractions require a nominal fee.”
“We’ll participate in the ‘Community Group Food Vending’ from noon to 5 p.m. (only).” says PWU Alumni Association of Southern California president Arceli Gagajena, “on Sunday, April 26th.”
In the past, the association (whose home base is Cerritos) drew queues of people waiting to taste its popular menu which included chicken (pre-
baked but barbecued on site), pancit (also cooked on site), rice, soda and water.
So, c’mon down! Arceli is calling on Philwomenians -- their families and friends -- to visit the PWU booth as “all proceeds will go to our alumni association,” she said.
But that’s not all… The next two months will be hectic for Philwomenians in the Southland as they prepare for the 25th anniversary of the PWU Alumni Association of SoCal, gathering alumni at a grand ball on May 23rd at the Marriott Hotel in Long Beach.
Why attend? asks president Arceli Gagajena of its members.
“To rekindle old ties,” she says, “to create new memories during the alumni gathering while enjoying our Southern California weather; to reconnect with classmates and teachers and meet new friends; and to learn how to enter into cyber space to communicate better with classmates and friends, among many other reasons,” she added.
The projects of the PWU Alumni Association of Southern California include donations to the Red Cross; feeding the poor and the homeless in the United States and in the Philippines; stipend assistance/scholarship programs; book donations to the PWU Library and children’s books to PWU’s neighboring public schools; and cash donations to the alma mater.

The first president of the PWUAASC is attending the association’s 25th anniversary! A very popular actress in the 60s, she was chosen Miss Philippine Movies.
She’s none other than Cynthia Ugalde, who married Dr. Oscar Tan in 1965, migrating to the United States not long after their wedding. They have two children.
A classic beauty queen, she was crowned Princess of Charity at St. Theresa’s College when she was only five years old, was Miss Junior at the PWU High School at 14, Miss Press
Photography in 1961, and Miss Philippines International in 1962, just to name a few titles. After living in the United States for some 37 years, she and her husband returned to the homeland in 2004.
