Sump pumps play a valuable role in keeping humidity levels down and preventing costly water damage. Typically, sump pumps are in the basement, and they are usually below ground level. Once it is determined the pump must be replaced, the new pump must be compatible with the current drainage pipes. To ensure your new pump is compatible bring the old one with you when purchasing the new one. The standards drain line sizes are 1.25 to 1.5 inch PVC pipe.
Make sure the new pump has the same pumping capacity as the old one. The average sump pump can pump between 2,000 and 3,000 gallons per hour, using a .3 to .5 horsepower motor. Lower capacity pumps, during heavy rainfall, may not be able to keep up and will run continually.
Items Needed
• Hacksaw For Trimming PVC Drain Pipe • Utility Knife For Trimming Rubber Drain Line If Used • Screwdriver For Loosening Hose Clamps • Channel Lock Pliers • PVC Glue
The pump will be enclosed in a liner that collects the water. The floor is typically sloped to allow excess water to drain into the liner. When the water reaches a certain level, it will trigger a valve to activate the pump. Begin by unplugging the old pump and disconnect it from the drain line. In some cases, there will only be a rubber drain line held with a clamp. Newer model sump pumps will have a fitting to connect the PVC pipe. If this is the case, connect the pipe using the PVC glue. If the drain line is rubber and is, still serviceable it can be used. Simply secure it to the fitting using a hose clamp.
Make sure the liner that the pump is encased in, is still water tight. Otherwise, any water collected will seep into the basement floor creating humidity and the potential for mold. Now is a good time to ensure the drain line has the proper slope. Pumps can push water vertically to some extent but there is no point in over taxing the new pump, let gravity help remove the excess water. Once the new pump is in place and the drain line is connected plug the pump in, and fill the liner with several gallons of water. The pump will activate once the water reaches a certain level.
