Keep These Plumbing Tools Around the House

When it comes to your health, you won’t try to set a broken bone on your own, but you do take steps every day to keep your body healthy—things like exercising and eating right. Similarly, while you wouldn’t attempt to remodel your bathroom plumbing without the help of a professional, you do take steps to maintain the systems in your house that are already in place.

There are a few tools that you should have around the house that is used to keep your toilets and drains running, prevent and fix minor leaks, and do other handy things that don’t always require an expert.

1. Screwdriver Set

A basic screwdriver set is arguably one of the essential tools that every house should have because screwdrivers can be useful in so many different situations. For instance, with the right one, you can do anything from fixing doors to prying open paint cans to building furniture to accessing the batteries in a kid’s toy (and so much more, of course). The thing about a screwdriver is that you never know when you’re going to need one, so it’s always best to have a few available.

2. Flange Plunger

You might think this is a little specific for a plunger, but there are a couple of styles of plungers, and they aren’t always right for the same thing. Keep a flange plunger around because they are ideal for unclogging toilets, thanks to the rubber lip on the inside that forms an excellent seal with toilet drains.

3. Caulker

A Caulker is a reusable gun that you use to apply caulk, which is a type of putty used to seal leaks and cracks. It’s good to have a caulker on hand because leaks in your home can allow tons of climate controlled air to escape or let the cold or hot air in, and this can cost you a lot on heating and cooling bills. By sealing leaks and cracks in your home, caulk keeps the outside out and the inside in, making your home more energy efficient.

Tip: A Caulker is important to have because you can’t apply caulk without one.

4. Pipe Wrench

A pipe wrench is one of those things that if you don’t know what it is, you may not be aware of how much you can do on your own in the house regarding maintenance. A pipe wrench is an ideal tool if you ever need to tighten or loosen pipe fittings and fixtures, like when you have a leak, lose something down the drain or have a blockage that you can’t fix with a plunger.

5.Cup Plunger

While a flange plunger is ideal for toilets, the cup plunger is your tool of choice when it comes to minor clogs in your sinks, tubs, and showers. The cup plunger is a little bigger than the flange style, and it’s perfect for removing drain blockages and keeping your lines running freely.

Tools can be tricky, because while they are incredibly handy, you also have to know how to use them to ensure you don’t do more damage than good. But with the right tools and a little know-how, you can do minor repairs and maintenance around the house, address problems, and work on projects of your own.
