National Diabetes Awareness Month has Arrived

Across the country, November is National Diabetes Awareness Month. Get active and start conversations to raise awareness around this disease that impacts a huge portion of the population.
With diabetes, in particular, small lifestyle changes can make a big difference. If you or someone you love has diabetes, this is the month to get involved. It’s not just a health issue either. The most recent statistics from the American Diabetes Association show that it costs $245 Billion a year to treat diabetes.
What can you do to help yourself or help others? Read on.
Take Charge to Reduce Complications
If you’ve got diabetes, you need to take care of yourself so that you don’t suffer from the many complications, which can often be fatal. You are at an increased risk of stroke and heart attack, so keep your weight healthy. Cut out salt, reduce red meat and alcohol. Do at least 30 minutes of cardiovascular exercise a day. Diabetes can cause blindness. Get your eyes checked at least on an annual basis.
Worldwide Event November 14th
Mark your calendars for November 14th, which is International Diabetes Day. The symbol of this day is a blue circle, which you can wear to show your support. Other ways you can get involved is by organizing a healthy eating seminar in your community, hosting a healthy meal or organize an event around this year’s theme which is “Act Today to Change Tomorrow.”
The key messages revolve around patient education and awareness about healthy eating, as well as influencing policy makers to make healthy food more accessible.
Your Support Network is Important
It probably comes as no surprise that you are far more likely to be successful in managing your diabetes and living your life to the fullest if you don’t try to do it yourself. Surround yourself with a supportive network that includes friends, family, technology and educational resources.
At the top of your list should be learning about healthy eating. You need to know about nutrition and portion sizes. Invite your family and friends to learn about healthy eating alongside you, so that you can do it together.
Download an app that can help you track your eating so that you can even out your blood sugars to a healthy range.

Strategies for Daily Management
You’ve got to start with getting the right medical care, which means regular checkups to monitor your medications and healthy lifestyle choices. If you smoke, now is the time to quit.
Diabetes can be better managed if you are a healthy weight, so if you are overweight, work towards reaching a healthy weight goal, and then maintain it with daily exercise and healthy eating.
