Replacing or repairing a sewer used to mean that a trench had to be dug for the length of the sewer. The trench would allow the old pipe to be removed and a new one to be installed. The process was and still is effective but can be expensive, time consuming, and destructive to anything that is in the path of the trench. Trenchless sewer repair and replacement is done without the need to dig a trench, saving both time and money.

With trenchless sewer repair or replacement two holes are dug at each end of the sewer line that is being replaced. After this is done a torpedo-shaped bursting head is placed at one end of the sewer line with a cable attached to it. The bursting head is pulled through the old sewer line breaking it apart and pushing the ground away to allow a new line to be put through the newly created hole. The new pipe is then run through the hole that was created by the bursting head. Once the new sewer line has been properly installed the holes that were dug at each end are filled and the process is done.

The entire processes of trenchless repair or replacement can often be done in a single day. Time is saved because in many cases garage floors, driveways, or walkways would need to be broken up so a trench could be dug through them. Forgoing that processes saves money on labor and material because that work simply does not need to be done!

The most common problem that can prevent trenchless repair is if other utilities are located too closely to the sewer line. If other utilities are too close, the bursting head can push the old pipe and soil into the utility damaging it. This will always be checked before any work has started.

Trenchless sewer repair and replacement is a more advanced technique that has advantages over other methods. The repair or replacement work is done quickly, with less time devoted towards digging the pipe up. With less labor involved, the work can be completed for less money.
