Discolored Water: Causes, Fixes & Prevention

Turning on a tap and discovering the water pouring into a glass is less than crystal clear can be disconcerting to anyone, but there are often logical explanations for discolored water. True, a few may be serious that have a more treacherous cause, but more often than not the strangely colored water is the result of a plumbing issue that can be remedied with plumbing services.
What Are The Causes?
Blue or Green Water
Though rare, this phenomena is caused by copper pipe corrosion that has advanced to the point where it can only be described as severe. In these cases, the water will appear blue-green. This would most likely be seen in a home or building with old piping.
Yellow, Orange, Red, or Brown Water
Discolored water in any of these colors will usually point to corrosion in the pipes. The reddish-brown color results from rust that has accumulated inside the pipes themselves. This does not pose a health hazard to anyone using the water, but rusty water can stain clothing. In this case, laundry may need to be postponed until this problem is fixed.
Murky Water
Water that is murky when a faucet is first turned on but clears up on its own after a few minutes is usually the result of a water shut off and should not continue. However, continuously murky water can be a sign of the beginnings of pipe corrosion or a backed up pipe.
How Can It Be Fixed?
In any case of discolored water, a plumber will test the water and analyze it for the root cause of the problem. If corrosion or other pipe damage is the cause, replacement of the pipes may be necessary. Calling a plumber should always be your first line of defense when discolored water presents itself.
How Do I Prevent it?
First, discard grease properly. Do not drain grease or oil into your sink. Pour used grease or excess cooking oil into a container and dispose of it. Wipe pans free, or oil before washing to cut down on what goes down the drain.
Testing and Inspection
Have your pipes inspected for corrosion, wear, and weaknesses. Your water should also be tested for pH balance, which can signal corrosion.
Preventative Maintenance
Have your pipes professionally flushed annually or semi-annually to prevent build up of sediment and other potential clogs.
