Do I Need Plumbing Repiping?

How do I know if I need to repipe my home?

You will know that repiping is needed in your home if you are currently experiencing low water pressure, extreme changes of temperature while showering, or leaks. The plumbing system in many older homes were outfitted with galvanized pipes. These pipes tend to corrode over time and begin to contaminate the home’s incoming water supply. Piles of rust inside of the pipe is what creates low water pressure inside the home. The pressure from the street’s mainline is strong, but by the time the water travels through the system it is slowed significantly.

Also, homes that were built with soft copper pipes in the ground under a slab of concrete are susceptible to leaks. When these leaks occur, the concrete has to be removed before the leak can be fixed. These leaks most often are the results of hard water. Water is classified as hard or soft depending upon how much calcium, limestone and iron is naturally found in the water supply of the home. And as you know, heavy machine tools are required to remove concrete, so the process is not easy or quick.

How long will it take?

The length of time that it will take for your house to be repiped will depend upon each home and its individual specifications. The repiping work can range from two days to two weeks or more.

Why should I hire a professional plumbing company?

Your regular plumber should not repipe your home because this is specialized work. The same comparison can be made between the skill difference of your family doctor and a surgeon. Your plumber can diagnose the problem, but someone who specializes in doing the procedure should actually do the work. Repiping a home is a massive job, no matter how small the home. It requires a persistently patient work ethic, by a knowledgeable team of professionals who will have to open up walls and floors to access the pipes.

The new piping that will be installed in your house will either be PEX piping or hard copper piping. PEX stands for Polyethylene that has been cross-linked with other materials to make it stronger. And although PEX piping is the less expensive of the two, it is also more flexible, making it easier to install. The hard copper piping is environmentally friendly and recyclable. And because it will last through any natural disaster, having it installed in your home will increase its value in the housing market. Investing in an installation by a professional plumbing company is definitely worth it.
