The Secret to Lowering Your Water Bill

The water bill is unusually high, what should I do?

As anyone in the plumbing business can attest to, the number one question asked by the customer most of the time is, “Why is my water bill so high?” With “What uses the most water in my house?” coming in as a close second. If you ever feel your water bill is either higher than usual, or higher than it should be, the first thing you should check for is a leak inside your house. Leaks can be found in a number of places, such as a dripping faucet, continuously running toilet, broken water heaters or pipes. A visual examination will most likely find the location of a leak, if that is the cause. It is highly important to consult a professional plumber if this is the case, for a small repair can save you money in the long run.

Other things to think about in the case of a high water bill are out of the ordinary events, like a full house during the kid’s summer break or having guests in your home. Also, think about things that you have done yourself that you may have forgotten during the time your water bill was being processed. Was there any freezing weather during which you purposefully left your water running in order to avoid frozen pipes? Did you recently fill your swimming pool?

What consumes the most water in my house?

Many would be surprised to learn that the greatest drain on water supply is your toilet. A leaky toilet, as you can imagine, is the worst of the worst when it comes to conserving water. It is well worth your time and money to research, and

invest in, newer low-flow (water-saving) and high-efficiency toilets. If you are switching from a older toilet to one of the new models, the savings will be immediately apparent on your water bill.

Washing dishes by hand uses a lot more water than when using a dishwasher. As with the toilets, a newer model dishwasher is best. Currently, dish washing machines use less than half of the water hand washing does, and the machines are becoming more efficient still, through constant advancements. If you are interested in conserving for the planet’s sake, and for the sake of your own wallet, always turn any water off when not in use. Reminders strategically placed throughout your house can help with this greatly.
