Maintaining a Garbage Disposal

Garbage disposals are a convenient thing to haven your house. They help get rid of bigger pieces of food that can not be disposed of in a regular sink. Garbage disposals also tend to clean themselves. However, there are cases when garbage disposals can accumulate an odor. This is due to the sludge that builds up on the sides.

When this happens, some food particles can get caught on the sludge. The food that gets caught on the sludge spoils and as a result, it gives off an odor. Over time, the food particles will build up and the odor will become very noticeable.

How a Plumber Can Help

Many odors can be easily taken care of by yourself. However, there are certain problems in the drain that can only be addressed by a professional. A plumber can do one of many things for getting rid of the odor. First, the plumber will evaluate the problem and determine what type of remedy that the odor needs. Then he will proceed to provide the remedy. It could be as simple as using a solution, or taking apart the drain and physically clean out the sludge or problem that is causing such an isolation.

What Not To Put in a Garbage Disposer

While problems such as odors can be fixed, there are ways to prevent odors.

One of these methods is to avoid putting certain foods in the garbage disposer. Among the foods that you should avoid throwing in the disposer are vegetables and starchy foods. Vegetables are stringy and full of fibers that could have it get stuck in the motor. Starchy foods could swell in the disposal which could cause it to clog. Otherwise, there would be leftovers in the disposal which could cause a lot of nasty odors.

Other Methods of Prevention

Another method for preventing odor is to leave the garbage disposer on a little longer. Many people will leave the garbage disposer on until they do not hear the food being disposed. While it does sound finished, there could still be food left in the disposer which could cause the formation of a sludge. It is recommended the the garbage disposer is left on for at least five seconds at a time.
