Make Your Plumbing System More Efficient

A few key changes to your plumbing system can make an enormous difference in the utility bills of your home. It is vital to take these into consideration if you want to reduce your carbon footprint and live a greener life!

-Begin by checking for leaks. Drips can be very costly and can waste about 20 gallons of water every day or more.

-Avoid using your toilet as a wastebasket. Flushing the toilet uses five to seven gallons of water.

-Install shower heads with a water saving feature. Showers use up to ten gallons per every minute.

Water saving shower heads can greatly conserve water usage.

-Be sure to insulate the water pipes. It is inexpensive and simple to do which will help warm up water quicker and save water.

-Shorten the length of your showers. Turn water off and on while soaping up and while rinsing. Every minute can use up to 10 gallons of water.

There are more things you can do.

After wetting your toothbrush, turn off the water. While you are brushing your teeth you do not need the water running. You can even fill a glass with water to rinse.

Only run your washing machine and dishwasher for full loads. This can amount to a great deal of savings as well as water conservation.

Decrease the use of garbage disposal units.

Turn the water off while you are washing your hands. Turn the water back on when you are done soaping up.

When cleaning vegetables, turn the water off.

Keep these tips in mind also.

Only water your lawn when it is needed. To know when your grass needs to be watered, step on it. If it springs back up immediately, it does not need water. If it remains flat, it needs to be watered. Typically, lawns only need one inch of water per week.

When watering your lawn deep soak it. Make sure you water your lawn long enough for the water to soak into the roots. Light sprinkling evaporates very quickly and does not help the root systems.

Be sure to only water during early morning. Do not water when it is too windy. Wind and sun can cause water to evaporate quickly.

When you are washing your car, do not let the water run. Instead, use a pail full of soapy water to wash your car. When you rinse the car you can use the hose. This can save up to 150 gallons of precious water! Additionally, if you use a spray nozzle this will save even more water.
