Prevent Those Pesky Water Stains

Do you have those impossible to get rid of stains in your tub or on your tile? These hard to remove stains can really turn an otherwise beautiful bathroom into a dull looking place. But what causes these stains and are they actually impossible to get rid of? Today we are going to learn the major causes for water stains and how to safely remove them.

Three Major Causes of Water Stains

Hardness Minerals

• The first contaminants that cause many dreaded bathroom stains are hardness minerals. These minerals when present in high enough levels can cause white stains referred to as lime scale. The most common type of hardness minerals is calcium. Over time these contaminants create buildup causing ugly scaling stains.

Not only are these stains bad looking they can actually buildup in pipes causing serious damage. When this occurs the pipes may need to be replaced by a professional plumber which can cost a few hundred bucks to a few thousand dollars.

Manganese

• Manganese is another major cause of staining. This element is found in the soil and can leach down in the water table. For those home that are using private well pumps this is a major issue. Higher levels of manganese can turn plumbing fixtures and tile surfaces brown and in some cause even black.

Iron

• Iron is another naturally occurring element that causes problems in the

bathroom. Just like manganese iron is present in the soil and homes with private wells often suffer from staining. Iron has a tendency to turn anything it comes in contact with brown. This includes any clothing that might be washed in the contaminated water.

How to Remove and Prevent Bathroom Water Stains

A solution of baking soda and vinegar works well to remove most water stains. With a little elbow grease these stains can safely be removed. It may take several applications to remove all of the stain. But the best way to keep water stains from becoming a problem in the first place is to install a water softener system.

This will need to be done by a professional plumber but is a great way to keep bathrooms looking great. A whole house water softener system will remove these heavy elements which cause so many problems with bathroom fixtures and plumbing. A certified plumber can install a whole house system in about four hours. This will help save money by protecting your plumbing for the damaging effects of hard water.
