Don’t Panic When Plumbing Problems Occur-Take Charge

You’ve been out for a day on the town with your family. You come home ready to relax and watch some television. However, when you open the front door relaxation will be the last thing on your mind. You have just been the proud recipient of time and chance, and your plumbing has gone array.

What do you do? Most people panic and immediately pick up the phone for help. While the local plumber is a phone call away, it’s going to take them some time to get there. If water is gushing, every minute it continues to spew is costing you hundreds, if not thousands, of dollars. Take a deep breath; here are some tips to help you through a plumbing emergency.

1. Identify the Source of The Leak

Your first goal is to find out where the leak is coming from. Has a pipe broken; is the sewer backing up in the house? There are only a hand full of things that can cause the house to fill with water. Check the hot water tank and the area where the water is coming from. It could be the toilet too. Once the source of the leak is identified, then it can be dealt with.

2. Turn Off The Source of The Water

Unless you’re dealing with a flash flood and Mother Nature is pouring water into the home, you can shut off your water. If the water is coming from the bathroom, you should have a shut off valve at the sink and the toilet. If this is not the area, the hot water tank, as well as the washer and dryer also have a shut off valve too.

These little values help you to turn off a special section of the water without shutting off the whole house. If it’s a pipe that’s leaking, you will have to turn off the main source. This is usually located near the water meter in the home. Once the water has been turned off, you can breathe a sigh of relief for a minute.

3. Call For Help

Depending on the size of the mess and what is involved, this is the point where you should call for help. If the services of an emergency plumber are needed, then most are available 24/7. They can handle hot water tanks, broken pipes, shut off valves and much more.

They will know what to do, as they are trained in dealing with these types of emergencies. If there is a sizable amount of water in the home, then it might be wise to call an extraction company in also. These companies can remove the excessive water and help to ensure the home doesn’t develop mold. Getting help in these situations is imperative.
