FALL PLUMBING PROBLEMS YOU CAN PREVENT

Three Common Home Disasters To Look Out for This Fall

When it comes time to checking out your home for the summer and ensuring that you are preparing for the cooler weather of the fall, there are a few items that most people tend to forget.

Even if you aren’t the most experienced plumber or winterization specialist on the block, there are always a few things you can do and look for that will save you time and money.

Removing All Exposed Water

Bleeding your hoses, covering your exterior pipes, and getting rid of any standing water is a major item to look for. Most people remember to take care of their pools, but they tend to forget about the stationary waterways.

If that freezes, it can burst upon thawing, which would cause a significant amount of water damage. It is definitely an item you should be reviewing before it gets too cool. Who uses the hose in the fall anyways? Turn it off and store it for the colder weather until spring!

Proper Exterior Drainage

Whether it’s because of leaves from the fall, regular clogging, or even ground shifting, you want to be sure that the water on the exterior of your house rolls away from the home and the base of your home.

The last thing you want to do is have a significant ice buildup around your home, or that can (and probably will) mean leaking when the water thaws. Make sure it has a way to melt and move away from your home and you won’t have to worry about leaks in a quick thaw or in the spring.

Check Interior Pipes For Insulation

A lot of folks forget that even if something is in their house or within the walls, they can still see extremely cold temperatures in the basement or against the foundation. If your pipes aren’t properly insulated, then you will want to be sure to wrap them the correct way.

Even a few minutes of work will prevent pipes from freezing as temperatures start to drop. That means you won’t have to worry about damage, mess, busted pipes, or even being out of water for days at a time.

A few quick minutes of surveying can be the difference when it comes to preparing your house for the fall and the cooler weather. Remember, it isn’t too difficult to protect your assets, so be sure to check out these potential problem areas and you should avoid some major headaches down the line.
