WATER DISCOLORATION AND WHAT IT COULD MEAN

Three Reasons You Water is Discolored

When you turn the faucet of your Simi Valley home, obviously you expect to see crystal clear water running. Understandably, it can be a bit unnerving when your water comes out discolored. Though discolored water is not always a sign of a serious problem, it is important to know its possible causes.

1- Corrosion

A top cause of discolored water is corrosion inside your hot water tank. This corrosion often results in water that can vary in color from brown to orange. A hot water tank that is more than 15 years old can sometimes cause substances to leach into your water supply and change the water’s color.

Typically, there will be signs that your hot water tank is in need of replacement such as debris at the bottom of the tank, tank corrosion and water temperature inconsistency. Should you notice any of these signs, it is important to replace your hot water tank as soon as possible.

2- External Maintenance

The most common cause of discolored water is the result of local fire hydrant testing and maintenance. Periodically, fire hydrants must be flushed and checked to ensure that they are functioning properly. Should you notice changes to the color of your water, check with your local municipality to make sure they are not performing fire hydrant maintenance.

When major pipes are flushed, dirt and other debris can be pushed through the pipes, resulting in the discolored water you see. If this is the case, do not drink, bathe or prepare food until your water department indicates that it is safe to do so.

In the meantime, you should bring water to a full rolling boil prior to using it for drinking, bathing or preparing food. Doing this will help eliminate any harmful substances from the water.

3- Break in the Water Main

A third common cause of discolored water is caused by a major water main break. Water mains carry water underground through a series of pipes into your home. When a water main breaks, millions of gallons of water begin to rush over dirt and other debris leading to discolored water and low water pressure.

If you notice either of those signs, check your local news to see if perhaps a major water main break has occurred. In this case, wait for further instructions before attempting to use the water in your home. If you notice that your water is discolored on a regular basis, be sure to contact a qualified Simi Valley plumber who can thoroughly assess the situation.
